When I was a young girl, and even not a young girl, I would anticipate the end of August and the release of the Sears Christmas catalog. For months I would pour over the pages and make lists, and plans and even back up plans! As I got older, the season has shifted to November, and the catalog from Christmas to spring. In November I start scouring the internet and placing orders for the free, and sometimes not free spring seed catalogs. Then starting mid December, I stalk the mailbox daily awaiting their arrival. The glossy pages bursting with color, ideas, and hope of the coming spring and summer days.
I try to plant mainly heritage seeds. Over the past few years, seed saving has of importance and this is best and most accurately accomplished with heritage seeds. Saving seeds helps lower the next year’s cost and provides my family with food security.
What catalogues do I order? Bakers Creek Heirloom Seeds is like the bible of gardening to me. I love this catalog most of all. It does cost money, but it is worth every penny in my opinion. This year I ordered both the complete catalog, and paid the shipping for the free one. West Coast Seeds, William Dam Seeds, T&T Seeds, Veseys Seeds, Halifax Seed, and OSC Seeds. Heritage Harvest Seeds has stopped putting out a catalog which is too bad when it comes to my planning but they are a great heritage seed company as well.
This year I am planning to use up the seeds I have from previous years first and add more flowers. I have placed orders with Bakers Creek, William Dam Seeds and West Coast Seeds. In my next post I will share a complete list of what we will be planting this year and why we chose those varieties. ~S
